In Maryland, the agriculture sector is the largest source of polluted runoff into the Chesapeake Bay. And the poultry industry is the largest contributor to the problem.
Monica Brooks, a resident of Salisbury, Md., is co-founder of Concerned Citizens against industrial CAFOs, a grassroots organization fighting for environmental justice. Ms. Brooks led a successful effort to prevent 13 poultry houses from being erected on nearby land. Brooks, a member of the state’s Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities, was among local residents concerned about the impacts of air pollution from the houses. The fields now grow sunflowers and sod.
